Conference Week!

Parents thank you for making spring conferences a success! I truly appreciate your suggestions and concerns.  I am not perfect, but I am always willing to learn and listen. I am looking forward to the last trimester with my class and your children.

In Reading, we are working on identifying what is important and what is simply interesting in our reading. Essentially, students are finding the main idea in their reading. We will practice this strategy as a class with National Geographic articles and, then apply the strategy in our silent reading novels.  The novels are Pedro’s Journal and Sadako.

In Math, we are going to work on standard and metric linear conversions and introduce area and perimeter We will also start a small research project on measurement. Ask your child what question they want to answer.

We also continue to learn about Native Americans living in Washington. This week students will be placed in groups to complete a poster about Native Americans in Washington. Each person will be responsible to complete one part of the poster.  On the poster students will compare and contrast Coastal and Plateau Indians, draw pictures on aspects of Native American life, and answer our essential questions.

Our new book project for March and April will be a diorama/triorama based on a fantasy book - due April 29th, 2009, after the WASL.

P.S. - Go to the Homework Page for a copy the instruction sheet, if your child loses his/hers!

Book Blitz and News

To celebrate Dr. Suess’ birthday and the book blitz Drew’s dad, Mr. Lindh, read a fun poem by Shel Silverstein titled Sick and talked to the class about being a lawyer. Many students asked lots of great questions! The class also enjoyed root beer floats for accomplishing their reading goal. For the month of March students can earn a free Silverwood ticket, to be used during the summer months, by reading outside school hours ten or more hours. Completed reading logs are due March 25, 2009.

Next week, parent-teacher conferences will be held Tuesday through Friday, from 1:00p.m. to 5:30p.m. Our late night is Thursday, until approximately 8:20p.m. HALF-DAYS Tuesday through Friday!

February Book Projects due March 5, 2009

We had two read-a-thons over the last two Fridays after school, that were great successes! We earned an additional 22 hours towards our reading goal of 75 hours for the class. We read over 90 hours for the month of February! Most students will enjoy root beer floats this Friday! There will also be guest readers on Friday celebrating Dr. Suess’ birthday.  Starting this week students can participate in another reading challenge to earn a free Silverwood ticket. Students must read a total of ten hours by the end of the month, March 25, 2009.  Students must turn in the recording sheet by March 25th. I sent home the recording sheet last week.

This week there will be an assembly titled “Celebrating Differences” put on by Mrs. Huffman and Mrs. Sanborns’ classes. It starts at 2:00 on Thursday.

Next week, we will have half days due to parent-teacher conferences. Please look for your scheduled parent-teacher conference day and time this week. Students will have a letter for you to read and class work for you to look at during the conference. I encourage students to attend parent-teacher conferences.

In class, we have begun practicing WASL reading and math tests, plus students will participate in another All-Day Write soon in preparation the WASL Writing assessment. The WASL test will be held in April after Spring break.

Please take a look at some of the student essays I uploaded to the Student Work page.
